School Handbook

DIRECTOR/TUTOR: The tutor provides weekly academic support in the classroom by facilitating and teaching each of the classes. The tutor is a source of support and encouragement to both parents and students. The tutor will provide feedback in the form of conversations with parents and students and will issue quizzes or assessments to help parents evaluate their student’s progress or make portfolios of the student’s work.

STUDENT: The student is a willing participant who will work on the weekly program at home to the best of his/her ability. The student will come to class prepared and ready to discuss each of the subjects to the best of his/her ability.

  • Arrive on-time, every time!

  • Come to class prepared

  • Participate in class activities & conversations

  • Help with set -up & clean-up

  • Lend a hand to your tutor and classmates

  • Honor God in speech and action

  • Respect the church property

  • Reserve cell phone use for emergencies only

PARENT: The parent is the primary teacher. He/She is fully responsible for the student’s education. The parent will tailor the assignments as the student needs and will grade and assign grades to the student’s work.

The parent will use the guide/lesson planner to sign it weekly that their student completed the work and will use this to write notes to the tutor if needed. Parents will use the school folder to send homework assignments into class and will check it after class for anything sent by the tutor. Parents will use the band app to communicate and stay on top of student assignments and events.

Technology

In Pearls of Wisdom Academy, community days are unplugged days for all enrolled students during class time. Devices should not be used during class, unless it is for a specific class project. Students may bring a cell phone for emergencies only. If you need to contact your student during the day, you can text your tutor or the director.

Chores/Clean-up

Each student is expected to help with set-up at the beginning of the day and cleanup at the end of the day so that we leave the classroom as we found it.

Lunch

Students are to pack a lunch from home. Students cannot use the kitchen at the church. They need to have a lunch that does not require a microwave or fridge. Students must clean up their lunch area when finished. Students may have play time in the gym or outside until the lunch period is over.

Snacks/Water

Students will need to eat only in the gym or on the playground and not in classrooms. Please note that there should be no gum chewing during class. Please only bring water to drink and remind your student to fill their water bottle before class begins and at snack/lunch time.

Dress Code

Students should come to class dressed neatly, honorably, appropriate for the occasion, and conducive to full participation in the day’s activities. Students might think about wearing shoes that are good for recess/P.E. We also ask that students wear their Pearls of Wisdom shirts or plain colored shirts as much as possible. We love self-expression, but it can be distracting to other students in a learning environment. We ask that students not dress in gothic clothes or character t-shirts. We also ask that no belly shirts, spaghetti straps, or short skirts or shorts be worn at school.

Discipline

Tutors help set out clear expectations and classroom management techniques so that students can learn in a safe and secure environment. Tutors may set up a reward system. They will first handle things in the classroom. If a student is struggling with following the expectations, a parent will be contacted to stay in the classroom and help the child work on expectations. If a student continues to struggle, there will be a discussion on students not continuing the program.

Hands to Ourselves/No Love Talk

We ask that students keep their hands to themselves. No playing with hair during class and no boyfriend/girlfriend talk at school.

Illness Policy

If anyone in your family is sick, we ask that your whole family stay home. We ask that families be more cautious with sickness and stay home if there is any chance that you could be contagious. If you are unsure, you can reach out to your child's tutor or the director. If students look sick at school, we will call parents to pick them up.
